What Does Liberation Mean?
Liberation isn’t just about freedom from external constraints; it’s the gentle yet powerful release of the inner limitations we place on ourselves. So often, we carry the expectations of others, fears of judgment, and doubts about our worth.
True liberation invites us to recognize these layers, peeling them back to reveal our authentic self—a self that is deeply loved, exactly as it is.
In her work, Byron Katie speaks about the three kinds of business: mine, yours, and God’s.
She invites us to focus only on our own “business”—our inner thoughts, beliefs, and self-judgments—while letting go of things outside our control.
When we stay in our own business, we come back to ourselves, allowing others their freedom while we embrace ours.
Discovering True Freedom with Byron Katie’s ‘Three Kinds of Business’
One of the most powerful teachings on self-liberation comes from Byron Katie’s method. In her wisdom, she introduces us to the three kinds of business that exist in the universe:
👤 Your Business: These are the things you can control—your thoughts, your actions, and how you respond to the world around you. This is where you find true freedom, by turning inward and managing your reactions and beliefs.
👥 Other People’s Business: This encompasses others' thoughts, actions, and perceptions of you. When we focus on others' judgments or expectations, we begin to lose connection with ourselves, becoming weighed down by the opinions we cannot change.
🪽 God’s Business (or the Universe’s): These are the forces and events beyond human control—everything from the weather to life circumstances. When we try to control these aspects, we feel drained and disconnected from our own path.
Katie’s teaching invites us to return our attention to our business, releasing the imaginary burdens of others’ opinions and outcomes we can’t alter. This shift can feel like a breath of fresh air, lightening the emotional load we carry.
Byron Katie’s Work and Free Resources
Katie offers a free downloadable booklet on her website, introducing readers to the concepts of The Work and how to apply these teachings in daily life.
It’s a powerful, practical approach that gently guides you back to what’s truly yours, showing how inner peace emerges when we let go of what’s outside our control.
By questioning thoughts like “I have to make others happy” or “They need to think well of me”, you come to realize that these beliefs often keep you from being at peace within yourself.
With each moment we focus on what’s truly ours to manage, we free ourselves, inviting peace, love, and alignment with our own truth.
Practices to Embrace Inner Liberation
1️⃣ Self-Reflection in “Your Own Business”
Take a quiet moment each day to sit with yourself and ask, “What am I carrying that isn’t mine?”
Gently identify which thoughts or fears belong to someone else’s expectations.
Let them drift by, like a feather in the wind.
2️⃣ Setting Boundaries with Compassion
Practice kindly saying no without guilt.
When asked to do something you’re uncomfortable with, you might say, “I appreciate the trust, but I need to honor my well-being.”
Remember, self-love sometimes requires us to lovingly decline.
3️⃣ Let Go with the Breath
As you inhale, focus on self-acceptance.
With each exhale, release a specific worry or judgment.
Try this simple meditation, allowing each breath to bring lightness and peace.
Affirmations to Embrace Inner Freedom
❤️ “I am free to release others’ judgments and embrace my own truth.”
🧡 “My peace is found within; I return to my inner light.”
💛 “I honor my boundaries with love and self-respect.”
💚 “I am enough, just as I am.”
The Feather and the Stone
Once, a wise teacher held out a feather and a stone to their students. They asked each one to hold the feather and stone in their open hands. The feather floated gently, carried by the wind, while the stone sat heavy, unmoved.
- The feather, - the teacher explained, - represents the lightness we feel when we release others’ judgments and expectations. The stone, however, is like the weight we carry when we focus on things beyond our control.
Each student then held only the feather, and they felt the lightness of letting go, if only for a moment.
True liberation, the teacher reminded them, is the act of putting down the stone to embrace the freedom of the feather. 🌬️
